This warming is expected to disproportionately affect land areas and high latitudes. Extreme weather conditions, such as heatwaves and intense El Niño episodes, will become more frequent. Rising sea levels, projected to increase by 9 to 88 cm by 2100, threaten coastal populations, particularly in vulnerable regions like the Nile delta and the Maldives.
Climate change also poses serious threats to public health by compromising access to clean water, food security, and shelter. It may increase the spread of diseases due to the expansion of vector species like mosquitoes. Global Warming
Global warming is primarily driven by human-induced greenhouse gas emissions, particularly carbon dioxide. Ozone Layer Depletion
The ozone layer, situated 20–50 km above the Earth's surface, shields life from harmful ultraviolet radiation. However, chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have led to ozone depletion, creating "holes" in regions such as Antarctica. This has resulted in increased cases of skin cancer, cataracts, and damage to crops and ecosystems.
The Montreal Protocol (1987) successfully reduced the use of CFCs, and the ozone layer is expected to recover over the next 50 years. However, other chemicals like bromine and nitrous oxides continue to pose threats.
Nuclear Accidents and Nuclear Holocaust
Nuclear energy, while a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels, carries significant risks. Nuclear accidents, such as Chernobyl, have caused widespread destruction, long-term health issues, and environmental contamination. The use of nuclear weapons during World War II in Hiroshima and Nagasaki remains one of history's most catastrophic events, with long-lasting effects including cancer and genetic disorders among survivors.
