In-Situ and Ex-Situ Conservation of Biodiversity

In-situ conservation refers to the preservation of living species, especially wild and endangered ones, within their natural habitats and ecosystems. This approach involves setting aside wilderness areas such as biosphere reserves, national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries. These areas allow species to thrive within their natural environments, alongside other flora and fauna. India has 589 protected areas, including 89 national parks and 500 wildlife sanctuaries. Special efforts in regions like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands aim to conserve unique island ecosystems. Noteworthy examples include the Great Himalayan National Park, home to the snow leopard, and the Kaziranga National Park, which supports diverse species like elephants, swamp deer, and pelicans.

Ex-situ conservation, on the other hand, involves preserving species outside their natural habitats, in controlled environments such as botanical gardens, zoos, and gene banks. This method enables the breeding of endangered species and avoids inbreeding to ensure genetic robustness. Examples include successful breeding programs at the Madras Crocodile Trust Bank, Guchali Zoo, and Delhi Zoo. These efforts often aim to reintroduce species to their natural habitats while addressing threats like poaching and habitat destruction.


Conservation of Cultivators and Livestock Breeds

India’s agricultural diversity has drastically reduced over the decades, with the number of rice varieties shrinking from 30,000 to only a handful. These traditional varieties are vital for developing disease-resistant strains in the future, highlighting the importance of conserving genetic variability. Farmers need encouragement to cultivate traditional breeds despite economic challenges, as these varieties provide long-term benefits to biodiversity and food security.


Biological Diversity Act 2002

The Biological Diversity Act of 2002 was enacted to conserve India's biodiversity, ensure sustainable usage, and promote fair benefit-sharing from biological resources. Key provisions include:

  • Prohibition of transferring genetic material and claiming intellectual property rights without government approval.
  • Regulation of biodiversity usage, with exemptions for local communities.
  • Conservation measures, including technology transfers, joint research, and equitable benefit-sharing.

The act also established the National Biodiversity Authority to oversee these regulations, advise the government, and promote conservation education and training.


Need for Conserving Biodiversity

Biodiversity is crucial for maintaining Earth's life support systems, providing potential resources for the future, and ensuring ecological stability. Its conservation is ethically important to preserve the variety of life forms that support human existence.


Conservation Strategies

Conservation efforts focus on species, habitats, and ecosystems through in-situ and ex-situ methods. In-situ conservation maintains species within their natural habitats, ensuring ecological balance and genetic diversity. Ex-situ conservation, involving breeding programs, gene banks, and zoos, acts as a supplementary strategy for species facing immediate threats.


Project Tiger

Launched in 1973, Project Tiger aims to protect the tiger population and its habitat. It began with nine reserves and has expanded to 27, covering 37,761 sq. km. The initiative operates on a core-buffer strategy, with strict protections in the core areas and sustainable development in buffer zones. This project has been instrumental in conserving biodiversity and engaging local communities in wildlife protection.


Natural Reserves

Natural reserves like biosphere reserves and wetlands play a critical role in conserving biodiversity. Biosphere reserves balance human activity with nature conservation, promoting sustainable development. Wetlands, with their unique ecosystems, support diverse species, regulate water cycles, and act as natural buffers against climatic and environmental challenges.


Biodiversity Hotspots

Biodiversity hotspots are regions with exceptional species richness and high levels of endemism, under significant threat from human activities. India hosts four major hotspots: the Himalayas, Indo-Burma, Sundaland (Nicobar Islands), and the Western Ghats. These regions are critical for global biodiversity and ecological stability.


IUCN Red List

The IUCN Red List is a global resource for assessing the conservation status of species. It categorizes species based on their risk of extinction and provides valuable data to guide conservation strategies worldwide.
