Introduction to the Nervous System

  • Definition: The nervous system is a complex network of specialized cells that coordinate the body's activities by transmitting signals to and from different parts of the body.
  • Functions:
    1. Detects external and internal stimuli.
    2. Processes information in the brain and spinal cord.
    3. Sends signals to muscles, glands, and other organs for appropriate responses.

Divisions of the Nervous System

  1. Central Nervous System (CNS):

    • Includes the brain and spinal cord.
    • Processes information and coordinates responses.
  2. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS):

    • Includes all nerves outside the CNS.
    • Divided into:
      • Somatic Nervous System: Controls voluntary actions (e.g., skeletal muscle movement).
      • Autonomic Nervous System: Controls involuntary actions (e.g., heartbeat, digestion).
        • Further divided into:
          • Sympathetic Nervous System: Activates fight or flight responses.
          • Parasympathetic Nervous System: Promotes rest and digest functions.

Structure of Neurons

  1. Definition: Neurons are the basic structural and functional units of the nervous system.
  2. Parts of a Neuron:
    • Cell Body (Soma):

      • Short, branched extensions that receive signals from other neurons or stimuli.
    • Axon:
      • Long extension that transmits signals away from the cell body.

  1. Definition: A synapse is the junction between two neurons or between a neuron and an effector cell.

    • Chemical Synapse:
      • Involves neurotransmitters that cross the synaptic cleft.

  3. Process of Signal Transmission:

Central Nervous System (CNS)

  1. Spinal Cord:

Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)

    • Effects:
      • Increases heart rate.
      • Dilates pupils.
      • Inhibits digestion.
  2. Parasympathetic Nervous System:

    • Activates the "rest and digest" response.
    • Effects:
      • Decreases heart rate.
      • Stimulates digestion.
      • Promotes relaxation.
